Articles featuring empirical research (often called quantitative research or original research) report on the results of observational studies that the authors themselves conducted. They are a particular type of scholarly journal article--almost all research articles come from scholarly journals, but not every scholarly article is a research article!
A few library databases, such as PsycINFO, allow you limit your search to empirical research studies. But most of the time, it's up to you to learn to recognize the features of empirical research.
